Nowadays, we’re living in an information age in which internet tools and applications, including website design, have become so convenient and user-friendly for even those of us who have zero experience in coding, programming, or web design and development.
In the early 2000’s, when I was designing and building my own websites, I had to learn the appropriate programming languages, such as C or Java, and also played around with web development applications, such as Dreamweaver, in order to design and develop the websites according to my liking. It would take weeks, if not months, to launch a simple website.
Fast forward ten years or so, things have changed so significantly that I can design, develop and launch a functioning website within minutes. Blogging, web hosting, web development, web content management, and various other related platforms have been mushrooming. Anyone can launch his or her own website or blog very easily.
Does this mean we no longer need web designers and web developers?
The answer is: it depends. It depends on what you want to do with your website, whether you will have a lot of website visitors at any one time thus causing spikes of website traffic loading, whether you want to sell products or services online, whether you have long-term plan to build a brand or a market positioning with your website, and many other related considerations.
If you just want to write blog posts during your free time, or if you just want to have a web space to document your living experiences, such as your travels, your culinary joys, your parenting moments, etc., then most likely you can find a blogging platform in your country, such as blogspot.com, or wordpress.com, or sina.com, etc. that would suit your needs just fine. You can even learn to launch a simple self-hosted WordPress website using one of the various free themes and plugins, at a very minimum cost, and in a very short time.
However, while you’re DIY’ing your own website, most likely you don’t know how to make sure that your website is secure (e.g. against spammers, hackers, viruses, threats, etc.), that your website is online almost all the time (i.e. minimize downtime), that your website can handle the visitor traffic that you’re anticipating, and a host of other issues.
A good web designer and developer can help you take care of all the necessary considerations and build a solid foundation for your website, right from the beginning. While it is possible to DIY your website, there is still expertise and up-to-date industrial knowledge on web design and development that you might have no idea about. For instance, how to choose a good and suitable web hosting provider that meets your budget and website needs, how to choose a content management platform, how to choose the best theme for your needs, how to build a solid content management architecture for your website that will help your website SEO (Search Engine Optimization) in the long run, how to maintain your website going forward, how to know what you can do on your own vs. what you should hire a professional to do going forward, and so on.
There are many things a web designer and developer does for your website in the background than you might have realized. Of course, it is important that you choose to work with a good, experienced, and professional web designer and developer. It can save you a lot of headaches, not only in handling the technical stuff, but also in communicating your website needs and in making sure that the web designer understands your needs and delivers a fast, secured, well-functioning, beautiful, and global website with all modern features, such as being mobile-responsive, that you want and need.
